user engagement app

“With a combination of humor and fearlessness, Last Week Tonight has done an unlikely thing: spurred action...[The] Last Week Tonight team has found a way to take a seemingly complicated issue, remove the talking points and cultural baggage surrounding it, break it into understandable parts—and then slowly rebuild it. It’s an ingenious formula that’s making a difference in the real world.” - theatlantic.com

User Storyboard

Last Week Tonight usually ends with something watchers can do relative to the show. Anything from the MDDA hat, to contacting your local representative.

But! If we are watching OnDemand, or are watching when it does air - which is late on Sunday night - time and opportunity can pass, leaving otherwise interested users out of the loop.
Solution

The Last Week Tonight App connects users to the action items from the show - and anything else that Jon Oliver does which is remotely amusing.
The app sends users notifications about how they can affect local government, the details of investigative journalism, or a gif of Jon launching salmon out of a potato gun.

Onboarding Screen
When viewers download One Damn Thing, The Last Week Tonight App, they are introduced to the interface. The JonBot, the Jon Oliver avatar, walks the new user through the interaction with Jon's usual humor and professionalism.

Content Sample

Some of the content on the app can be conjured from parts of the show that are never really touched on. The opening images are all labeled with Figure #'s, that we can elaborate and have fun with, as they are frequently updated, and always punny.

Content Sample Demo
Once the episode airs, the app pushes content from the new show to the user at scheduled and relevant timelines. For instance, links to contact local or national agencies, or purchasing a "Make Donald Drumph Again" cap. Content can include animated gifs, links, and special exclusive content.

The purpose of the app is to connect viewers to action items soon enough to be relevant, and as easy as tapping on The One Damn Thing you can do, from Last Week Tonight.
